The 10th annual ESCRS Clinical Trends Survey was launched at the 2024 Congress in Barcelona. This year’s survey received over 3,000 responses, building upon the success of previous editions, which have gathered input from more than 15,000 participants.
The survey asked ESCRS delegates key questions about the challenges they regularly face in clinical practice. Topics included presbyopia correction, astigmatism management, ocular surface disease, glaucoma, and, as shown here, cataract extraction.
One major advantage of conducting this annual survey is the ability to track year-over-year trends. Notably, the data revealed a significant increase in the use of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (IOLs) in cataract surgery—from 7% in 2016 to 16% in 2024. This 9-percentage-point increase is statistically significant.
Commenting on this trend for the September 2024 edition of EUROTIMES (available here), ESCRS leader Nic Reus suggested that the rise in presbyopia-correcting IOL usage can largely be attributed to the growing popularity of extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses. Indeed, when examining usage by category, the most notable trend is the increasing percentage of survey respondents opting for EDOF lenses (see supplement).
Dr. Reus noted that this trend is reflected in his own practice, where he began using the new generation of non-diffractive EDOF lenses in 2020. Since then, he has observed a steady increase in their adoption—without a corresponding decline in the number of multifocal IOLs implanted.
To hear insights on presbyopia-correcting IOLs from Dr. Reus and other leading experts, including Filomena Ribeiro (Co-Chair), Oliver Findl (Co-Chair), Joaquín Fernández, and Ramza Diamanti, join us for the “RIOL IME Forum: Key Strategies for Success with Presbyopia-Correcting IOLs in Cataract Surgery.” The session will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025, at N. Skalkotas, Megaron Athens International Conference Centre (MAICC), as part of the Winter ESCRS conference.
