Data Snapshot: Astigmatism in a Monofocal Cataract Patient

Data Snapshot: Astigmatism in a Monofocal Cataract Patient

The 10th annual ESCRS Clinical Trends Survey was launched at the 2024 Congress in Barcelona. This survey received over 3,000 responses and built upon the success of prior surveys which have already included over 15,000 participants.

The survey asked ESCRS delegates key questions related to current issues they face in their practice on a regular basis. Topics included presbyopia correction, astigmatism management, ocular surface disease, glaucoma, and, as shown here, cataract extraction.

One notable finding of the survey is that as the level of astigmatism increases in a monofocal cataract patient, respondents are more likely to report using toric presbyopia-correcting IOLs. Correspondingly, there are decrease in the likelihood that they would use on-axis incision as well as all other options (manual LRI or AK, femtosecond AK, postop laser vision correction, glasses or contact lenses, no special correction needed). The increased use of toric presbyopia-correcting IOLs in patients with higher levels of astigmatism likely reflects the increased importance of addressing the astigmatism coupled with the the precision and convenience these lenses offer in addressing both astigmatism and presbyopia simultaneously.

More information on the survey and results on other topics from the 2023 survey can be found here in the September 2024 edition of EUROTIMES.
