AAO and The Fundingsland Group Launch Independent Medical Education at AAO 2025

San Francisco Bay Area, CA  April 25, 2025The Fundingsland Group (TFG) and The American Academy of Ophthalmology® (the Academy) announce a strategic partnership to provide Independent Medical Education (IME) programming beginning at the AAO 2025 annual meeting from October 17 to 20 in Orlando, Florida. This partnership will offer Academy attendees access to the latest published data and case-based experiences through Continuing Medical Education (CME) symposia and enduring material across compelling clinical topics such as neovascular age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, geographic atrophy, interventional glaucoma, presbyopia/toric correcting IOLs, and ocular surface disease.

Learning objectives for each program will be determined based on educational needs identified through a novel AAO clinical trends survey set to launch later this year. The survey will gather insights into the clinical opinions and practice patterns of Academy delegates. The Academy will review year-over-year trends.

Renowned ophthalmologists Julie Schallhorn, MD, MS, Professor of Ophthalmology at UCSF, San Francisco; Arsham Sheybani, MD, Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis; and Lejla Vajzovic, MD, Professor of Ophthalmology, Pediatrics and Biomedical Engineering with Tenure, Duke University Eye Center, Durham, North Carolina, will lead the respective tracks to ensure all programs address the latest clinical topics and meet the highest standards of scientific rigor. Each track will offer comprehensive, evidence-based learning designed to address critical knowledge gaps and enhance patient care.

IME is developed independent of any involvement from pharmaceutical and medical device companies that support these educational activities through grants, offering physicians unbiased content that directly addresses specific educational goals determined from physician surveys. Backed by scientific evidence and clinical data, IME outcomes demonstrate a long-term impact on practice patterns and patient care.  These physician-led IME programs provide cutting-edge, fair, and balanced education that supports AAO attendees in delivering the best possible patient outcomes.

“TFG leverages physician survey data to identify clinical knowledge gaps, create tailored educational experiences, and measure long-term outcomes,” Bradley Fundingsland, TFG President, said. “By collaborating with leading experts at the Academy to develop these IME education programs, we are committed to advancing ophthalmic care through meaningful, practice-changing education.”

Specific details on the symposia, taking place at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando this October, and enduring materials will be announced this summer.  Each program will include interactive sessions, case-based discussions, and real-world insights, providing ophthalmologists with actionable knowledge they can immediately apply in their practices.
